About Finnerty Design

When I was ten, my classmates and I were instructed on how to make our own books. I dyed the marbled paper, stitched and bound the book, and meticulously filled the pages with my own stories, poems, and drawings. Our teacher added library cards so we could take turns “checking out” each other’s books, and wrote our reviews on the back covers. It was exciting to see their reactions to something I had imagined and made myself.
Today, that same instinct is backed by more than a decade designing books for print. I have a deep understanding of visual storytelling, typography, layout and composition, print specifications and production. Experience has taught me that a design that looks great on screen doesn’t always translate successfully to print, and I consider the finished book from the very beginning. I still find so much satisfaction in making books. I’ve seen the value a finished book can have for both the people who create it and those who receive it. Finding “Poems and Stories” again was a surprise—and a reminder that my instinct for this kind of creative work has always been there.
